Training & Employment

Basic science faculty provide mentorship to predoctoral students (primarily in immunology research) and postdoctoral fellows from around the world. Additionally, the Barbara Davis Center has an active predoctoral and postdoctoral research training program which includes both basic and clinical scientists and covers a range of disciplines, including immunology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology and population genetics. Studentships and fellowships are currently provided from National Institutes of Health (NIH) training grants in immunology and pediatrics, individual Juvenile Diabetes Foundation International Research Fellowships and American Diabetes Association Career Development and Mentor-Based Fellowship Awards. The Center also annually awards the O'Brien Physician-Scientist Fellowship Award and the Blum-Kovler Postdoctoral Research Award.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Immunology and Islet Cell Biology

The Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes is the largest diabetes and endocrine care program in the Colorado community. It’s basic research program focuses on immunology and genetics of type I diabetes, developmental and cell biology of the pancreas and transplantation immunobiology. The BDC recently moved to a new 100,000 ASF building on the UCD Anschutz Medical Center campus in Denver, Colorado and is seeking faculty recruits in immunology and islet cell biology to expand its research faculty.
Prospective applicants are expected to hold a PhD or equivalent degree and have an outstanding record of accomplishments in biomedical research. The appointee will establish a vigorous and independent research program in the area of immunology aiming to understand the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and design novel therapeutic approaches for its prevention or cure. They will contribute to the educational mission of the university through graduate teaching and supervision. The appointment is supported by generous space and startup funds and will initially be for 3 years, then subject to review for tenure track development.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae and the names of three or more references, a summary of research experience and a statement of proposed research directions.  Applications are submitted through www.jobsatcu.com, job posting #666626, Job posting #801036.

Assistant Professorship in Developmental/Stem Cell Biology

The Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes at the University of Colorado Denver in Aurora, CO provides clinical care for more than 3,000 children with type 1 diabetes and supports a program of basic and clinical research aimed at elucidation of the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and its prevention.  The research activities cover a broad range of disciplines including molecular and developmental biology of pancreatic islets, cellular immunology, transplant biology, epidemiology and molecular genetics.
The BDC is currently an Autoimmunity Center of Excellence, and a Diabetes and Endocrine Research Center. A major expansion of the clinical and basic research facilities at the BDC occurred in Spring 2005 when the clinic and research divisions moved to a new building of 110,000 GSF on the Anschutz Medical Center campus in the Denver area.  It is anticipated that the number of research faculty will effectively double over the next 5 years, and several new faculty positions and graduate and postgraduate research positions will be funded over this period.
We are currently seeking an individual with interest and experience in the area of the developmental biology of the endocrine pancreas for appointment at the level of Assistant Professor. The applicant will engage in full-time research and participate in graduate teaching and is expected to develop a research team in the area of the beta cell development, function and regeneration, and/or pathogenesis and treatment of type 1 diabetes. BDC staff are affiliated with active graduate program in Cell and Developmental Biology and other programs in molecular biology, neonatal research and regenerative medicine. Opportunities for participation in the graduate and undergraduate teaching are available through primary and secondary appointments UCD departments such as Pediatrics, Department of Cell and Developmental Biology and associated graduate training programs. Applicants should have Ph.D. or M.D. qualifications, a strong record of research achievement and a commitment to research relevant to the pathogenesis and treatment of type 1 diabetes.
Applications need to apply through www.jobsatcu.com, posting #801037, position #669002 submitting a curriculum vitae, the names of three or more references, a summary of research experience and a statement of proposed research direction.  The University of Colorado offers a full benefits package.  Information on University benefits programs, including eligibility, is located at http://www.cu.edu/pbs/.

Blum-Kovler Fellowship & O'Brien Fellowship

Applications are invited for two fellowships ($30,000 for one year) open to basic research scientists (Blum-Kovler Fellowship) or clinical research scientists (O'Brien Fellowship) holding a MD or PhD degree interested in the causes, prevention, and treatment of type 1 diabetes. Research areas relate to faculty interests and include immunology, transplantation, biology, islet molecular biology, etc.

Blum-Kovler Postdoctoral Fellowship
