The Molecular Biology Program is committed to providing training opportunities to minority students, and
encourages applications from qualified individuals of ethnic backgrounds that have been traditionally
underrepresented in biomedical research. His group includes Native Americans, Alaska Natives, U.S. Pacific
Islanders, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans. Typically, 15% of Molecular Biology students are from
underrepresented minority groups. The Program continues in its efforts to increase the number of minority
students, with the goal of training individuals from these underrepresented groups to become important
contributors to the biomedical research field.
For minority undergraduate students contemplating graduate school and a research career in the biomedical
sciences, the University of Colorado has a Summer Research Internship Program termed GEMS (Graduate
Experience for Multicultural Students). This is a nine-week Summer program designed largely for college
Sophomores and Juniors with majors in the sciences. The Program includes some didactic courses, seminars,
laboratory research and social events. For more information on the GEMS program, contact Sonia Flores,
Director of GEMS (Sonia.Flores@UCHSC.edu).
The University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine has a long tradition of fostering diversity among its
students, faculty, and staff. As a major metropolitan area, Denver also has a rich diversity of ethnic
