Getting the Test

The optimal time to collect the required specimen (dried blood spots) is between 24 and 48 hours of life. The test is most sensitive when done during the first week of life. We do not recommend this test for infants older than two months.

If your birthing hospital does not currently offer Expanded Newborn Screening, you can contact us to obtain a screening kit to bring to the hospital at the time of delivery.

After the Expanded Newborn Screening sample is drawn, it will need two to four hours to dry. It is important that you mail the newborn screening sample to the laboratory as soon as possible.

Please remember to include:
  1. Date of birth of your baby.
  2. Date the sample was taken.
  3. Name and phone number of your pediatrician.
  4. $25 cash or check  (payable to “UCHSC Biochemical Genetics”).
  5. Be sure to affix one first class postage stamp before mailing.
