Dr. Paul Bunn and C-Change Accelerate
Nation’s Fight Against Cancer

Paul Bunn, Jr., MD

C-Change, the first organization to bring together the public, private and nonprofit sectors to address cancer as a societal problem has announced its historic collaboration and its goal to prevent an additional one million new cancer cases and 500,000 cancer deaths by 2010.

Paul A. Bunn, Jr., MD, director of the University of Colorado Cancer Center is a member of C-Change, which is led by former President George Bush, former First Lady Barbara Bush and U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.

“Never before has the entire cancer community come together to accelerate progress against this disease,” said President Bush. “C-Change wants to streamline this nation’s efforts to save lives and eliminate suffering from cancer. That is something I am proud to be a part of.”

Through participation in C-Change, Dr. Bunn joins 150 nationally recognized leaders from across the cancer community to provide a united, multi-disciplinary attack on cancer.

C-Change members include leaders from:
Governmental agencies with federal funding devoted to cancer research and/or applications (including National Cancer Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)
Academic cancer centers (including Howard University Cancer Center, Duke University Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins, and many more)
Private, for-profit companies (including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Glaxo Smith Kline, Chiron Corporation and Johnson & Johnson Co.)
Nonprofit advocacy/consumer organizations (including Breast Cancer Resource Committee, Inc., National Patient Advocate Foundation, American Cancer Society, American Legacy Foundation, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network)
Professional organizations representing groups of individuals and/or organizations with a common interest in cancer (including American Society of Clinical Oncology, Oncology Nursing Society and American Association for Cancer Research)
Congressional, administration, and state government officials (including West Virginia Governor Bob Wise, as well as the directors of the NCI and CDC)
The media (including Paula Zahn, Larry King and Sam Donaldson)

This truly historic collaboration marks the first time these diverse groups representing all sectors of the cancer community have assembled to collectively advance progress in key areas of cancer care. Through its collaborative power, this unique public/private partnership intends to accelerate improvements in cancer prevention, early detection, research, tobacco control and access to care that cannot be achieved through individual efforts.

To do this, C-Change has assembled seven
teams focused on the following areas:

Primary Prevention and Early Detection
Cancer Research
State Cancer Plans
Access to Quality Care
Clinical Trials
Cancer Workforce Study Group
Taskforce on State Tobacco Funding

Dr. Bunn will serve on the Clinical Trials Team in the next year. These teams are tackling such important issues as supporting the states in their efforts to eliminate tobacco use, decreasing cancer disparities, increasing participation in research studies, advancing research of new, innovative cancer treatments, reaching underserved communities with information about screening and prevention and bolstering the number of employees working to provide care to cancer patients.

In addition, Dr. Bunn will attend two meetings of the full C-Change membership to discuss key issues and report on accomplishments.
