Keynote: Cultural Humility in the Era of Cultural Competence
Melanie Tervalon, MD, MPH, a pediatrician, health care consultant and long-time
resident of Oakland, Calif., is a member of the Alameda County Children and
Families Commission and has also served as senior advisor for special projects
in the Office of the President at The California Endowment, a health care
foundation.
How can we cross so much social, cultural and linguistic territory with individuals
and families that we serve and be knowledgeable, effective and respectful
at the same time? And how can we be certain, that with all of this, we are
doing the best job? Cultural humility offers one approach to the practice
of cultural competence in today’s socially and culturally complex health
care settings. Dr. Tervalon’s interactive keynote talk addresses definitions
surrounding the terms cultural competence and cultural humility, as well as
the terms race, ethnicity and racism, which are central to this dialogue.
Dr. Tervalon will include the audience in the process of understanding and
using concepts and terms, engaging in constructive dialogue in areas of uncertainty
and disagreement, and learning about our limitations and strengths in the
arena of culture and health.
