A letter to president
Hoffman
In response to the resignation of CU president Betsy Hoffman, members of the Student Senate of the Health Sciences Campuses of UCD wanted to express their appreciation for her efforts to make positive changes at The University of Colorado.
Dear President Hoffman,
As students of the Health Sciences Campuses of UCD, we will greatly miss
your principled leadership and vision. All of us are aware of the difficult
position you have been in regarding the recent political, economic, and social
challenges facing CU. We applaud your efforts on our behalf.
Although we are saddened by your decision to leave, we understand that your
choice was based on what you thought would be best for CU. You have truly
shown that a great leader is willing to make difficult decisions, even those
that are unpopular or misunderstood.
Your many accomplishments for CU will continue to guide this University in
fulfilling its potential as outlined in your strategic CU Vision 2010. The
dedication you have shown to CU is evident through your tireless advocacy
in the legislature, fundraising achievements (more than $1 billion), and resolve
for increasing funding for higher education. We deeply appreciate your efforts
and thank you for all the positive changes you have made at CU. Your dedication
is inspiring.
You also have been a wonderful advocate for the Health Sciences Center campuses
and students, ushering us into a new era of health care with the rapid development
of the Fitzsimons campus. Securing $203 million in COPs and more than $29
million in federal funding for the development of the Fitzsimons campus has
positioned CU to be a tremendous resource for the entire Rocky Mountain region.
In addition, achieving enterprise status has allowed CU to be a leader in
developing progressive legislative and business partnerships. This innovative
organizational model sets a precedent for all public higher education.
Under your leadership, the consolidation of the Health Sciences Center with
UC Denver has gained many opportunities, including enhanced training in business
and administration, and establishment of a pipeline for the recruitment of
health professionals. We look forward to these new partnerships and the growth
they will bring to CU, Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.
It is our hope that you will continue to be a powerful and dedicated advocate
for higher education in Colorado and the nation. Higher education is vitally
important for the future of the country, providing citizens with knowledge
and skills to solve increasingly complex problems. The availability of funding
for public education is crucial as a primary avenue for upward mobility and
relieving disparities. It is important that we continue forward with the vision
you have laid forth for CU, and that we focus on the amazing opportunities
you have helped foster.
Warm Regards,
Student Senate of the Health Sciences Campuses of UCD
