Updates about Electronic Security

The HSC Electronic Security Department is making excellent progress with the conversion of security systems for both campuses. Although the changes are virtually transparent to cardholders, the new system will provide many new features to assist in the protection of people, equipment and research.

You may have noticed a new design for the access control badges. The primary changes reflect the combination of campuses; the inclusion of academic and professional credentials; and the classification of the cardholder by their role on campus.

A bright color band with the overprint of the person’s role distinguishes each group: administration; faculty; staff; affiliate; student; or contractor. The badges are also printed on both sides so the information is always visible. The library bar code is smaller and is placed on the left edge, and the expiration date for the card is clearly noted.

The two badging offices will be replacing access control badges by attrition and as new groups of cardholders are enrolled by security. However, you are welcome to make an appointment to have your badge replaced.

Because so much laboratory and other restricted space has been added to the campus at Fitzsimons, access control badges must be visible at all times. Also, we ask that you notice those around you in the restricted and laboratory areas, to ensure that each has authority to be in the area and that they are displaying a current access control badge.

All doors between public and restricted areas remain locked and access is controlled. The security line protects the public from chemical, biological and radiation exposure; provides a security fire barrier; and provides security to protect people, property, and research. Self-policing is vital to protecting people, property, and research protocol.

During recent months, there have been bold and aggressive efforts in picketing, laboratory attacks, research compromise, and even disclosure of personal information of research staff, at universities around the country. Although, no such efforts have been seen at our campuses, we encourage everyone’s diligence and attention to their surroundings.

Please report any concerns to the University Police Department: Ninth Ave campus - 303-315-8888; Fitzsimons campus - 303-724-4444.
