20th Annual Nightingale Awards held

The 20th annual Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Human Caring, hosted by the Colorado Nurses Foundation (CNF), was held May 7, at the Renaissance Denver Hotel with a record attendance of more than 700 people.

Kim Christiansen, 9NEWS, returned as master of ceremonies. Jean Watson, PhD, FAAN, whose caring philosophy is used to guide new models of caring and healing practices in diverse settings worldwide, provided a special presentation entitled Caring and Love: Illuminating the light of nursing. Her presentation included her Candlelight ritual – a powerful reminder of the importance of nursing and how it reflects the original symbolic light of Florence Nightingale.

The grand finale of the evening was the announcement of the
six recipients of the Nightingale Award:

Robert Montgomery

Robert Montgomery, clinical nurse specialist, anesthesiology acute pain service, University of Colorado Hospital, Denver, ND 1995, UCD School of Nursing, Denver;

Rosemarie Gibbons, acute care director, San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center, Alamosa;

Kelly Johnson, vice president, patient care services and chief nursing officer, Craig Hospital, Englewood, BS Nursing 1996, UCCS Beth El College of Nursing & Health Sciences, Colorado Springs, MS Nursing 2003, UCD School of Nursing;

Cindy Neal, family nurse practitioner, Marillac Clinic, Grand Junction, MS Nursing 1996, UCD School of Nursing, Denver;

Rhoda Rogers, diabetes nurse educator, Salud Family Health Centers, Fort Lupton;

Joyce Vernon, staff nurse, Odyssey Health Care and Hospice, Colorado Springs.

The Nightingale Event was established in 1985 as a tribute to the professional excellence of Colorado’s registered nurses. The Nightingale Award was conceived to honor nurses whose contributions to human caring have gone beyond the cutting edge of the nursing profession.

As the primary fund-raiser for the Colorado Nurses Foundation, the goal of the event is two-fold: 1) to recognize outstanding Colorado nurses for their excellence in human caring, and 2) to raise funds for scholarships for nursing education in a time when there is a critical shortage of nurses. Including proceeds from last year’s event, the Colorado Nurses Foundation awarded $25,000 in nursing scholarships in December 2004.
