University of Colorado Hospital
celebrates liver transplant milestones

Igal Kam, MD, division head of transplant surgery at University of Colorado Hospital and professor at the CU School of Medicine, speaks at the April 30 celebration.

The University of Colorado Hospital hosted a celebration in honor of its liver transplantation program April 30 at the Adam’s Mark Hotel in Denver.

More than 1,000 liver transplant recipients were invited, including living liver donors and program team members, to celebrate the accomplishments in liver transplants over the past 42 years since the world’s first liver transplant was performed at University of Colorado Hospital by world-renowned transplant surgeon, Dr. Thomas Starzl.

The past year marked several milestones for the 17-year-old program at University of Colorado Hospital including the 1,000th liver transplant performed last July and the 50th anniversary of transplantation in December.

Chris Klug, Olympic snowboard medalist and liver transplant recipient, spoke at the celebration, and also served as a member of a panel discussion about transplantation.
