CU-Health Sciences Center Names New School of Medicine Chairman

DENVER (Aug. 17, 2004) — Dr. James Shore, University of Colorado Denver chancellor, and Dr. Richard Krugman, CU School of Medicine dean, have announced the appointment of Dr. Robert James Anderson as chair of the school's Department of Medicine, effective today.

Anderson has served as interim chair of the department since October 2002, and as head of the Division of General Internal Medicine since 1995.

"I am excited that Dr. Anderson has accepted the position as chair of the Department of Medicine in the School of Medicine," Krugman said. "His vision ensures that the department will be able to grow and capture the enormous potential of the new health sciences campus at Fitzsimons. There, he and his department will help to create the next generation of biomedical advances, translate those advances to quality patient care and provide medical education for the benefit of Colorado's citizens and this country."

Anderson has been a professor of medicine at CU since 1985, and served as chief of medical service at the Denver Veterans Administration Hospital, which is affiliated with the CU School of Medicine, from 1985-1996. He also served as site director of internal medicine residency at HealthOne Alliance and Columbia Presbyterian-Saint Luke's Hospital in Denver from 2000-2002. In 1995, Anderson was appointed the Gordon Meiklejohn endowed professor in internal medicine at CU. Anderson has board certification in three areas including internal medicine, nephrology and geriatrics

Anderson will serve as chair of medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital.

Anderson has received numerous awards, including the University of Colorado President's Award for Teaching Excellence in 1988 and 1992. He is consistently featured in the "Best Doctors in America," and has been named one of 5280 Magazine's Top Doctors. Anderson serves on numerous committees at the CU School of Medicine and University of Colorado Hospital, including the Curriculum Oversight Committee, Executive Committee, Clinical Faculty Advisory Committee, Residency Review Committee, Housestaff Selection Committee and Medical Board Advisory Committee.

Additionally, Anderson is an editorial consultant for many peer-reviewed medical journals and publications, including the American Journal of Nephrology, Critical Care Medicine, JAMA, New England Journal of Medicine, and the American Journal of Kidney Disease. Anderson is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Geriatrics Society, the Society of General Internal Medicine, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American College of Physicians.

An esteemed researcher, Anderson currently is studying the annual physical exam- patterns of use, cost-effectiveness and enhancing optimum preventive medical practice patterns in ambulatory care practice in the United States. He also is researching how mild kidney dysfunction impairs operative outcomes.

Anderson received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine in 1968. He completed his medical residency at University of Colorado Hospital, and served as chief medical resident from 1972-1973 and as a fellow in renal diseases from 1973-1975, both at University of Colorado Hospital.
