$1 Million Gift to Fund Renovation on CeDAR Campus
DENVER (August 18, 2004) — Dennis Brimhall, president of University of Colorado Hospital, and Robert Sweeney, president of the Kenneth King Foundation, today announced a $1 million gift to the Center for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation (CeDAR) on the University of Colorado Hospital at Fitzsimons.
The Kenneth King Foundation awarded the grant to support the acquisition and renovation of historic housing structures located on a section of the Fitzsimons site known as Colonels Row, just north of the planned CeDAR development. The buildings, which currently comprise four duplex units, will be purchased from The Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority.
Once renovated, the buildings will serve as housing for patients in day treatment and for families of CeDAR patients.
"We are grateful to the Kenneth King Foundation for this generous donation, which will enable us to purchase these buildings and preserve their historic integrity," Brimhall said.
Kenneth King, who died in 1992, established the Denver-based foundation in 1990. The multipurpose foundation was started to perpetuate and expand the principles that King believed in, including his belief in helping people. The foundation holds interests in human services, civic, health, educational and religious organizations based in Colorado.
CeDAR will be a residential evaluation and treatment facility for young adults and adults afflicted with chronic substance dependency and addiction. The $14 million state-of-the-art, two-story CeDAR facility will be housed on the west side of the Fitzsimons campus, in a picturesque wooded area with courtyards, ponds, paths and trails for exercise and meditation. The Center will be operated as part of the Anschutz Centers for Advanced Medicine at University of Colorado Hospital and under the leadership of a medical director from the Department of Psychiatry at the CU School of Medicine.
University of Colorado Hospital is the Rocky Mountain region's only academic tertiary care and referral center, and has been recognized as one of America's best hospitals, according to U.S.News & World Report. Located in Denver and Aurora, Colo., the hospital is part of the University of Colorado Denver campus, one of three campuses in the University of Colorado system.
