University of Colorado Denver Professor 1 st in Colorado to Receive European Sports Medicine Fellowship
DENVER (June 8, 2004) — Dr. Eric McCarty, associate professor and chief of sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, is the first sports medicine specialist from Colorado to be selected for a prestigious European fellowship and lecture series.
The American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) sponsored the month-long lectureship series McCarty participated in, April 13-May 8.
While in Europe, McCarty lectured at the Imperial College of London and also spoke at Oxford University in England, along with three other sports medicine specialists from the United States. The group also lectured in Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France, before concluding the series at the 11 th annual ESSKA Congress in Athens, Greece.
"I am honored to have been selected for this important lecture series," McCarty said. "It was an amazing opportunity to travel and lecture with other esteemed physicians in the sports medicine field."
Now in its 20 th year, the traveling fellowship was created to help foster a meaningful exchange of scientific information between the traveling fellows and their European hosts. Every two years, three North American orthopedic sports medicine specialists aged 45 and under are selected for their contributions to the field of sports medicine and their potential leadership in the field. During their trip they participate in scientific symposia, view research facilities and observe surgical procedures. The fellowship alternates between North American and European locations.
McCarty graduated from the CU School of Medicine in 1993, and completed his undergraduate studies at CU-Boulder, where he graduated in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology.He also was a star football player. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., as well as a fellowship in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY.
McCarty has received numerous awards, including the Vanderbilt Orthopedic Society's Outstanding Resident Research Award in 1998, and he was a finalist in 2001 for the Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame. McCarty is on the review committee for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, and serves on the editorial boards for numerous sports medicine publications. He serves as head team physician for both the University of Denver and the University of Colorado athletic teams.
