UCD Chancellor Shore and a Record Thirty-eight Students to Be Honored at This Year's Annual Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) Luncheon at Fitzsimons
DENVER (November 1, 2004) — A record 38 students in Colorado will each receive either $5,000 or $6,000 scholarships from the local chapter of Achievement Rewards for College Scientists (ARCS) at the annual luncheon to be held at the University of Colorado Denver's Fitzsimons campus on Thursday, Nov. 11. Dr. James Shore, chancellor of UCD, will be honored at the luncheon as ARCS' "Honoree of the Year."
Scholarship recipients include ten UCD students, nine CU-Boulder students, ten Colorado State University students, and nine students from the Colorado School of Mines. Jim Benemann, news anchor for KCNC-TV Channel 4, will introduce the scholars. Attending representatives from the Hach Scientific Foundation will also be recognized for their $72,000 donation to the ARCS Denver Chapter this year in addition to a $60,000 donation through the Denver Chapter distributed to other chapters of ARCS across the country.
ARCS scholarships are awarded to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students studying to complete their degrees in science, medicine and engineering. All ARCS students must also be US citizens and demonstrate financial need. The Denver Chapter of ARCS gave a total of $202,000 in scholarships this year, for a total of more than $1.6 million since it was chartered in 1976.
This year also marks the first year a scholar was named from UCD's Auraria campus. This year's ten UCD students make up the largest ARCS scholars group in UCD's long relationship with the nonprofit organization.
"The ARCS Foundation provides valuable scholarships to some of the most exceptional science majors in the nation," Shore said. "The Denver Chapter has provided CU science students $769,000 in scholarships over the last 28 years. I commend ARCS' efforts to expand the pool of the next generation of scientists and engineers."
ARCS Denver Chapter also honors an individual each year who has contributed to the excellence and furthering of science, engineering and/or medicine. Richard Krugman, MD, dean of the CU School of Medicine, will introduce Chancellor Shore as ARCS' "Honoree of the Year."
"Dr. Shore is an enthusiastic supporter of ARCS," said Ann Lowdermilk, fund development chair, ARCS Denver Chapter. "At a recent meeting of the Chancellor's Society, he said, 'All education and all science in the 21st century will be interdisciplinary.' Dr. Shore is forward-thinking and is taking action to encourage the furthering of science.
"Not only did he lead the merger of the University of Colorado Denver and UC Denver into one entity - a move that further encourages collaborative efforts in research - but we have also watched him take the helm in the move to Fitzsimons. Dr. Shore is the chancellor of a great institution that has continued to generate excellence in all areas of research, medical and other science-based education and we are happy to present him with this highest of honor from our organization," Lowdermilk added.
This year's outstanding scholarship recipients are studying specialties including mechanical, chemical and civil engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, computer science, dentistry, and human and veterinary medicine. Their research interests include diabetes, lung cancer, cardio/pulmonary disease, genetics, neuroradiology, global warming, renewable energy, urban sustainability, and more.
Approximately 70 percent of ARCS scholars remain in Colorado after graduation and contribute to the growing technology, biotechnology and medical research industries in the state. ARCS scholars can be found at University of Colorado Hospital, Lockheed Martin and Ball Corporation, to name a few.
ARCS is the only women's organization of its kind in the country and is made up of volunteers who give 100 percent of all funds raised to academically outstanding science students across the United States each year. As of June 30, 2004, ARCS had awarded approximately 9,900 scholars more than $49 million and is expected to exceed more than $50 million to more than 10,000 recipients by year-end.
