University of Colorado Denver's Grants Top $300 Million

DENVER (November 9, 2004) - The University of Colorado Denver recently reported award totals for fiscal year 2004. The total dollar contribution received for sponsored programs was approximately $16 million greater than FY 2003 awards, a 5.5 percent increase. UCD's research funding alone increased by seven percent over the previous year and totaled more than $251 million - accounting for more than 83 percent of all grants and contracts for the year.

According to the annual report issued by the Office of Grants and Contracts, the total number of awards for sponsored programs exceeded 1,521 and totaled more than $302 million. The grants funding is used for furthering research in numerous fields and disciplines including pediatrics, pharmaceuticals, dentistry, psychiatry, cancer, diabetes, genetics and more.

"The achievements of the last year are encouraging for UC Denver and Health Sciences Center," said John R. Sladek, PhD, vice chancellor for research. "We can continue to attribute this unprecedented growth to the faculty's exceptional success in obtaining sponsored program funding."

The National Institutes of Health were by far the largest grantor, accounting for more than 65 percent of the total grants. Other grant totals include 8.5 percent from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; 10.6 percent from international and industrial sources; 6.4 percent from various associations and foundations; 4.8 percent from hospitals and universities; 3.7 percent from state and local government, and less than one percent from other federal resources.

The University of Colorado Denver is one of three campuses in the University of Colorado system. Located in Denver and Aurora, Colo., the center includes schools of medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and dentistry, a graduate school and a teaching hospital.
