Robert D. D'Ambrosia, MD, Recognized for Lifetime Achievement in Orthopaedics

ROSEMONT, Ill. — The New Jersey Orthopaedic Society - the oldest orthopaedic state society - recently bestowed its highest honor, the Goldenberg Lecture Award, upon Robert D. D'Ambrosia, MD, at its 29th Annual Fall Symposium. This award is presented annually to a nationally prominent speaker or lecturer in honor of Raphael Goldenberg, MD, a leading orthopaedic surgeon and former chief of orthopaedic surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Patterson, NJ.

Dr. D'Ambrosia, a Denver resident, serves as professor and chairman of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Colorado Denver, where he is actively involved in residency selection, training and mentoring. In addition to serving as editor-in-chief of Orthopaedics magazine, he is also the president-elect of the American Section of International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, and past-president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

"We are happy to commemorate Dr. D'Ambrosia's dedication to the advancement of orthopaedics, including conducting cutting-edge research and prioritizing patient care," said New Jersey Orthopaedic Society program chair, Stuart J. Fischer, MD. "He has truly touched the lives of orthopaedic surgeons, students and patients across the country."

After serving for 27 years in the orthopaedics department at Louisiana State University's medical school, the institution recently dedicated an academic appointment in his honor: the Robert D. D'Ambrosia Chair of Orthopaedics. The 2004 Goldenberg recipient completed fellowships in orthopaedic surgery at University of California, Davis; in arthritis and rheumatism at the Arthritis Foundation; in rheumatology and rheumatoid surgery and his residency at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also earned his medical degree.

Past winners of the Goldenberg Lecture Award have included other AAOS past-presidents S. Terry Canale, MD, and Doug Jackson, MD.

An orthopaedic surgeon is a physician with extensive training in the diagnosis and non-surgical as well as surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

The New Jersey Orthopaedic Society provides members with educational and advocacy services via a professional and collegial atmosphere. Membership is open to all orthopaedic surgeons practicing in New Jersey.

With more than 27,000 members, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (www.aaos.org) or (www.orthoinfo.org), is a not-for-profit organization that provides education programs for orthopaedic surgeons, allied health professionals and the public. An advocate for improved patient care, the Academy is participating in the Bone and Joint Decade (www.usbjd.org), the global initiative in the years 2002-2011 to raise awareness of musculoskeletal health to stimulate research and improve people's quality of life. President Bush has declared the years 2002-2011 National Bone and Joint Decade in support of these objectives.
