University of Colorado School of Medicine Celebrates Research

WHAT: CU School of Medicine research open house at the newly opened Research Complex 1 on the Fitzsimons campus in Aurora. The public, the university community and the news media are invited to attend. Guests will experience dozens of interactive exhibits with scientists, physicians and educators, highlighting programs and outcomes in education, research, patient care and community service. Interactive exhibits include:
  • The PEAK Performance motion analysis system that analyzes movements of healthy and impaired individuals both for research and teaching purposes.
  • A geographic information system for environmental epidemiology that tracks the movement of toxic chemicals in aquifers, surveillance for West Nile and an internet site that displays real-time mapping of air pollutants.
  • Navigation in orthopedics and joint surgeries using a Medtronic StealthStation for navigation, sawbones and instruments.
  • The smallest things you will ever see-molecules in 3-D using special goggles and a computer, microscopic crystals through microscopes, and a 3-D model of DNA.
The open house gives guests the opportunity to experience research processes in various areas of study such as cancer, nutrition, hormonal disorders, substance abuse, psychiatric disorders, the neurosciences, genetics and more. Children are welcome.

  • Boris Tabakoff, MD, pharmacology, "The Future of Drug Design"
  • Judy Regensteiner, PhD, cardiology/Heart Center, "The Center for Women's Health Research"
  • Jane Reusch, MD, endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes, "Diabetes: Prevention, Therapy and a Cure"
  • Paul MacLean, Center for Human Nutrition, "Why is It So Hard to Keep the Weight Off?"
  • Randy Meacham, MD, surgery, "Men's Health: What Every Man Should Know About Urologic Health"
WHERE: Research Complex 1 at the University of Colorado Denver's Fitzsimons campus in Aurora. Exhibits will be staged in RC1's North Tower. Parking is available off of Montview Blvd., directly north of the Research Towers.
