Nursing Students To Conduct Health Needs Assessment Surveys in Park County

DENVER (September 24, 2004) — Nursing graduate students will collaborate with faculty, local public health nurses, and state public health nursing consultants to conduct community health assessments with three rural Colorado counties this fall. Nursing doctorate and master degree students attending the University of Colorado Denver 's School of Nursing, who are enrolled in the public health nursing program, will conduct a community health assessment from Oct. 4 through Oct. 6 in partnership with Park County.

The community health assessment provides a comprehensive appraisal of the health and human services in Park County, identifies and describes the community's strengths, resources, risk factors and problem areas and recommends targeted community action to enhance the physical, psychosocial, and cultural health of the Park County community.

CU nursing students will approach county residents in public areas, including on the street, at places of business and in parks, to ask for their participation in a survey about Park County. Students will also conduct scheduled interviews with key informants, community leaders and experts on specific aspects of community services and activities. Existing health, census and community service data will also be included in the assessment.

Following two months of compiling and analyzing the information, CU School of Nursing professors Gene Marsh, PhD, and Lauren Clark, PhD, and the students will present the findings to community leaders in a public presentation in Park County in January 2005.

Anyone who would like to be interviewed as a key informant for the assessment, or who has questions about the project, can contact Marti Wooten at the Public Health Nursing office in Fairplay.
