CU School of Medicine Dean Richard Krugman Named Chair-Elect of AAMC

DENVER (Nov. 29, 2005) — Dr. Richard D. Krugman, dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, has been appointed chair-elect of the Association of American Medical Colleges, the AAMC has announced.

In his new role, Krugman will sit on the AAMC's 10-member executive committee, which serves on behalf of the association's executive council and acts on matters that require immediate action. The Washington, D.C.-based AAMC is a nonprofit association of medical schools, teaching hospitals and academic societies. According to the group's mission statement, the AAMC's goal is to improve the nation's health by enhancing the effectiveness of academic medicine.

"With the aging of the baby boomer generation and the subsequent stress on the medical community, the coming years will be critical for the nation's medical schools to generate superb doctors for tomorrow. I look forward to lending my hand in assisting the AAMC support our medical schools as they strive to set higher standards of excellence and provide even better health care to all patients," Krugman said.

Previously, Krugman served as chair of the AAMC's Council of Deans. He became dean of the CU School of Medicine on March 1, 1992, after serving as acting dean for 20 months. A professor of pediatrics, Krugman served from 1981 to 1992 as director of the C. Henry Kempe National Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect, and has gained international prominence in the field of child abuse prevention and treatment.

A graduate of Princeton University, Krugman earned his medical degree at New York University School of Medicine. He is a board-certified pediatrician who completed his internship and residency in pediatrics at the CU School of Medicine.

CU School of Medicine faculty work to advance science and improve care as the physicians, educators and scientists at University of Colorado Hospital, The Children's Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, National Jewish Medical and Research Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
