Bruce Schroffel Named University of Colorado Hospital President and CEO
DENVER (October 18, 2005) — Bruce Schroffel has accepted the position of president and CEO at University of Colorado Hospital. He is currently the director and chief executive officer at Stony Brook University Hospital in New York. Schroffel will take the helm at the University of Colorado Hospital effective Jan. 17.
"We are fortunate to have recruited someone of the caliber and background that Bruce Schroffel brings to our academic medical center," said Dr. James Shore, chairman of the University of Colorado Hospital Authority Board of Directors and chancellor at University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center. "He is the perfect choice to guide the hospital's future and build on the successes of the past several years, including completing the move to Fitzsimons and growing new medical programs."
At Stony Brook since 2001, Schroffel said he focused on increasing market share, integrating systems, fundraising and addressing morale and culture issues. Prior to taking that position, he was senior vice president and chief operating officer at the University of California, San Francisco/Stanford Health Care. He also served in administrative positions at the UCSF Medical Center and at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
University of Colorado Hospital has great potential to be among the top 10 hospitals in the country in the next few years, thanks in part to the move to Fitzsimons, its outstanding faculty and staff, and an affiliation with the CU School of Medicine, Schroffel said.
"If you look at the top 10 hospitals in the country, they're not great because they're great independently," he said. "They're great because of the relationships with great schools."
Schroffel described his leadership style as one of collaboration, transparency, integrity and honesty, and plans to focus on solidifying University of Colorado Hospital's financial health, growing hospital programs and successfully completing the transition to the Fitzsimons campus.
Schroffel holds a master's in public health and master's of science degrees from Columbia University, as well as a bachelor's degree from the University of California.
