Anschutz Medical Campus Announcement Fact Sheet

The Gift
The $25 million gift to the Health Sciences Center is in addition to previous gifts to its affiliated University of Colorado Hospital. The Anschutz Foundation has been a visionary philanthropic partner for more than a decade. Their contributions total $91 million -- $30 million for its hospital's inpatient center, $25 million for its outpatient center, $10 million for its addiction treatment center, and this recent investment – dating back to January 2000. An additional $1 million has supported research and programs at the Health Sciences Center .

The latest gift of $25 million, will partially fund the completion of Research Complex 2, a major research facility on the campus, which will open in 2008. The remainder will support the program in Integrative Medicine and marketing and branding efforts for the new campus.

The Vision
The Anschutz Medical Campus is poised to become one of the top teaching, research and clinical facilities in the world. Home to many medical “firsts” including the first successful liver transplant, the study and development of a vaccine to prevent shingles, and identification of the first gene that carries a risk for schizophrenia, CU's Health Sciences Center is on an exciting trajectory to continue the tradition of excellence and innovation. The faculty housed at the Anschutz Medical Campus are working to unlock the fundamental mechanisms of adult and children's diabetes, obesity, alcoholism, cancer (breast, kidney, prostate, lung and skin), heart disease, emphysema, and organ transplants, among others. The visionary gifts of the Anschutz family will play a transformational role in healthcare for generations to come in Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region.

By the end of 2010, the entire Health Sciences Center will be on the Anschutz Medical Campus. The unprecedented move is estimated to cost $1.385 billion and will result in a substantial increase in available space.

The History
In 1995, when Fitzsimons was officially put on the Base Realignment and Closure list, officials from Health Sciences Center , University of Colorado Hospital and the City of Aurora presented an innovative proposal to the Department of Defense in Washington , D.C. The proposal emphasized the benefits of reusing the decommissioned base to build — from the ground up — a world-class, academic health center, including state-of-the-art healthcare facilities. In addition, the campus will be directly adjacent to the Colorado Bioscience Park Aurora, providing opportunities to take university research discoveries into the stream of commerce at an accelerated rate, through affiliation with the biotech companies located in the 160-acre research park.

This bold new step created the largest redevelopment of an academic medical complex in the country.
