University of Colorado Denver Physician Named Among Leading Molecular Biology Scientists

AURORA, Colo. (Dec. 18, 2007) - Charles A. Dinarello, MD, professor of infectious disease at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, was recently elected as a European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) associate member. Only 50 leading scientists worldwide were honored with the prestigious membership. Forty-two of the new members are based in Europe and neighboring countries, while only eight distinguished scientists from Australia, India and the United States receive the special honor of associate membership. The newly elected EMBO members join a community of more than 1,300 members in Europe and more than 80 associate members worldwide.

Election as an EMBO member is a tribute to the significant contribution to the advancement of science made by each of these researchers. EMBO elects new members annually on the basis of scientific excellence.

Dr. Dinarello is considered one of the founding fathers of cytokine biology - the science of several regulatory proteins, such as interleukins and lymphokines, being released by cells of the immune system which then act as intercellular mediators in the creation of an immune and inflammatory response.

Dinarello was at Tufts University in Boston prior to UC Denver. Since his arrival at UC Denver 10 years ago, Dinarello has discovered interleukin-18 binding protein (together with his Israeli colleagues) and interleukin-32, a new cytokine. His work is often considered the trigger for the development of anti-cytokine based therapies for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

The latest scientists to join EMBO come from 16 different countries and represent a broad cross-section of the worldwide molecular life sciences community.

The School of Medicine faculty work to advance science and improve care as the physicians, educators and scientists at University of Colorado Hospital, The Children's Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, National Jewish Medical and Research Center and the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The School is part of the University of Colorado Denver, one of three universities in the University of Colorado system.
