UCDHSC Medical Students Join National Rally in Support of Children’s Health Insurance

AURORA, Colo. (Oct. 2, 2007) – Medical students of the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center’s School of Medicine rallied today to support the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and the reauthorization and expansion that would continue coverage for the more than 6 million American children who would otherwise be uninsured. The rally was part of a national movement to spur Congress to override the President’s anticipated veto of SCHIP.

UCDHSC School of Medicine students joined more than 32 medical schools and pediatric teaching hospitals across the country on Tuesday, Oct. 2, to participate in “Standing Up For SCHIP” to encourage Congress to overturn the President’s promised veto of the reauthorization of SCHIP.

Organized by second year medical student, Ben Mendoza, the medical students of UCDHSC’s School of Medicine came out in force, donning their white physician coats, to make a statement.

“SCHIP is a successful program that covers more than 6 million children whose parents work but cannot afford or are not offered health insurance for their kids,” said Mendoza. “It’s vital that this program is continued as an important investment in our country’s future.”

The School of Medicine faculty work to advance science and improve care as the physicians, educators and scientists at University of Colorado Hospital, The Children’s Hospital, Denver Health, National Jewish Medical and Research Center and the Veterans Administration Medical Center. The School is part of the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center, one of three universities in the University of Colorado system.
