New name for state's premier research university

DENVER (Oct. 29, 2007) - A simpler name has been given to the state's largest research and professional education university: University of Colorado Denver. A vote today by the CU Board of Regents set a permanent name for the institution that includes the Downtown Campus in Denver and Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The university has used a temporary name - University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center - since the Regents combined the two campuses in 2004.

"The new name uses the strength of the University of Colorado reputation, locates us in a metro area that has global recognition and gives us flexibility. It's the first step in a much broader effort to spotlight the excellence in teaching, research, health care and community service that we represent," said Chancellor M. Roy Wilson, who selected the University of Colorado Denver name from among several possibilities. I want to thank the members of the faculty and staff as well as the community who provided important and thoughtful input that guided the decision-making process.

The new name is one with which the community is admittedly familiar. Community members often have referred to the Downtown Denver Campus as the University of Colorado at Denver. The focus now is to gain true understanding and promotion of the scope of education and practice of our faculty, staff and students.

Collaboration across the Downtown Campus in Denver and the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora demonstrates the promise of 21st Century education. Initiatives tap the expertise of faculty and students from all locations that improve our communities. The University of Colorado Denver offers more than 100 degree programs in 12 schools and colleges, awarding more than 3,400 degrees each year. More than 28,000 students attend the university..

The combined campuses create a university that has a diverse student body, attracts the most research funding in Colorado, and confers the most graduate degrees in the state. Last year, the University of Colorado Denver received a record $390 million in sponsored research funding and grants. It has the stateÕs largest business school, and the only Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, Public Affairs and Architecture and Planning.

The Board of Regents approved the name change at a meeting in Denver. The board is charged constitutionally with the general supervision of the university and the exclusive control and direction of all funds of and appropriations to the university, unless otherwise provided by law.
