University of Colorado Denver Physician Elected to the Association of American Physicians

AURORA, Colo. (Feb.14, 2008) - Kenneth L. Tyler, MD, Reuler-Lewin Family professor of Neurology and professor of Medicine and Microbiology at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and Chief of Neurology at the VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System has been elected to the prestigious Association of American Physicians (AAP). Election is an honor bestowed upon approximately 75 individuals yearly by the Council of the Association. Tyler is now one of a select group of Denver members.

AAP members must have achieved medical excellence in their careers. Election provides members the opportunity to share their scientific discoveries and contributions with their peers at the annual meeting.

Dr. Tyler has been elected to AAP for his distinguished contributions to the study of viral infections of the nervous system, both basic and clinical. His basic research is funded by NIH and the Department of Veterans Affairs and involves investigating how viruses kill cells they infect. In his clinical research, Dr. Tyler has studied central nervous system diseases caused by herpes viruses and is a widely recognized expert on the neurological complications of West Nile virus infection.

"The AAP is considered the 'senior' academic society in internal medicine and so I am extremely pleased and honored to be elected a member of this prestigious organization," said Tyler.

The official induction of new members will take place in April in Chicago at the joint meeting of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) and the Association of American Physicians (AAP).

Esteemed Nobel laureates as well as those from the National Academy of Science and the Institute of Medicine have been members of AAP. Selected representatives of the international scientific community are also nominated yearly by the Council as honorary members of the Association.

The AAP is a nonprofit, professional organization founded by seven physicians in 1885 for the advancement of scientific and practical medicine as well as to provide role models for future generations of physicians and medical scientists. The Association is currently composed of approximately 1,000 active members and 550 emeritus and honorary members from around the world, including the U.S. and Canada.

The School of Medicine faculty work to advance science and improve care as the physicians, educators and scientists at University of Colorado Hospital, The Children's Hospital, Denver Health, National Jewish Medical and Research Center, and the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Degrees offered by the UC Denver School of Medicine include doctor of medicine, doctor of physical therapy, and masters of physician assistant studies. The School is part of the University of Colorado Denver, one of three universities in the University of Colorado system.
