University of Colorado Denver Professor Honored at Houston International Film Festival

DENVER (June 3, 2008) – David Liban, University of Colorado Denver assistant professor of theatre, film and video production in the College of Arts & Media, recently received two awards at the Houston International Film Festival (a.k.a. Worldfest Houston). The Ghosts of Elitch Theatre won a Gold Award in the category of Historical Documentaries, and Geocache won a Silver Award in the Short Subjects category. There were more than 4,500 entries competing from 37 countries.

“To be recognized out of such an esteemed group of competitors is truly an honor,” said Liban.

“The Elitch Theatre, built in 1891, is a Denver icon and the oldest standing summer theatre in the country. The historical documentary/ghost story, The Ghosts of Elitch Theatre, details the ghost of Mary Elitch who many believe has kept the theatre from falling, the theatre’s renovations and its life in the next 100 years.

Geocache is a documentary film based on geocaching, the newest high-tech treasure hunt in which participants use a Global Satellite Positioning (GPS) system to look for hidden items across the globe. It’s a growing sport that combines the internet, GPS, technology and hiking. The film explains through the participants how the game is played and examines run-ins with the law, the community of players, conflicts between land managers and geocachers and a look at possible environmental impact.
