Lung Function Tests (PFTs)

Lung Function Tests (also called pulmonary function tests, or PFTs) evaluate how well your lungs work. The tests determine how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs, and how well your lungs add oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from your blood. The tests can diagnose lung diseases and measure the severity of lung problems. Go to Lung Function tests (PFTs) for more information on PFTs.

NLST Mission Statement

The primary objective of the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) is to determine whether screening with spiral CT, as compared with chest x-ray, reduces lung cancer mortality among high risk individuals. The mission of the NLST Screening Center at the Universityof Colorado Cancer Center is to provide the study investigators and the sponsor (the National Cancer Institute) with accurate data in order to address the study objective. Our mission includes customer service for our study participants and our co-workers. Participant satisfaction is of utmost importance, and we will collaborate with co-workers to assure that participant's needs regarding the NLST study are met. In support of this mission we will:

  • Encourage the active participation of all NLST study participants
  • Express appreciation to the study subjects for their participation in the study
  • Work collaboratively with other NLST staff and support each other in our mission
  • Promote diversity in the work place and appreciate diversity in our study population
  • Follow the NLST protocol as contained in the NLST Manual of Operations and Procedures (MOOP)
  • Collect and report accurate study data in a timely manner
