Colorado On the Move™ is a statewide initiative to prevent obesity and improve health by increasing lifestyle physical activity. Colorado On the Move™ has programs to increase physical activity in schools, worksites and communities. The programs use electronic step counters to help participants monitor and increase physical activity. Our goal is to increase walking by 2000 steps/day (equivalent to walking about 1 mile) and decrease 100 calories of intake daily for each person in Colorado. This small and achievable increase in physical activity and decrease in intake has the potential to totally stop the weight gain seen in the population of Colorado over the past decade. Increased steps can also help maintain a weight loss for those people who want to lose weight. The programs in schools, worksite and communities show participants how to accumulate steps throughout the day to achieve a step goal. The programs are designed to be FUN!
Some ideas to increase your steps are:
- take a walk at noon,
- walk your dog,
- host a walking meeting,
- park further away at the store,
- start a walking club,
- march in place while talking on the phone or watching tv,
- or walk with your family in the evening.
It is surprising how easy it is to increase walking by using step counters!
Ideas to decrease 100 calories include:
- drinking diet soda or water instead of regular soda,
- leave a few bites on your plate,
- or substitute milk and sugar for cream and sugar in your coffee.
People in Colorado value health and quality of life. We have beautiful mountains, wonderful walking trails, and accessible city parks. We hope this campaign will appeal to families, schools, worksites, and communities to recognize the importance of physical activity. Walk for your health and enjoy our beautiful state. Our success will be measured by increased steps. Step counters are worn on the belt or waistband. They are inexpensive and accessible to everyone in Colorado. Everyone can join the FUN!
Colorado On the Move™ is supported by a public-private partnership of academia, government and private industry. As the first affiliate of America On the Move™, we encourage you to visit their website and register as an individual or a group.
