The Step-Counting Experience

Overall, Americans 13 years and older report taking an average of 10,619 steps during a two-day period – 5,310 steps a day. Number of steps differed by gender, age and activity level:

  • Men: 2-day average = 11,455 (5,728 per day)
  • Women: 2-day average = 9,813 (4,907 per day)
  • 13 – 17 year olds: 2-day average = 14,072 (7,036 per day)
  • 18 – 29 year olds: 2-day average = 13,246 (6,623 per day)
  • 30 – 39 year olds: 2-day average = 10,388 (5,194 per day)
  • 40 – 49 year olds: 2-day average = 11,250 (5,625 per day)
  • 50 – 59 year olds: 2-day average = 8,847 (4,424 per day)
  • 60 years and older: 2-day average = 7,751 (3,876 per day)
  • Physically active: 2-day average = 11,657 (5,829 per day)
  • Physically inactive: 2-day average = 8,085 (4,043 per day)

Seventy-six percent of Americans contacted agreed to wear the pedometer (step-counter) for a period of 2 days and 69% of those people provided step information at the end of that period. Three percent of those who agreed to wear the pedometer were currently wearing pedometers already.
