The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at the University of Colorado Denver is designed to prepare fellows for an academic career and to develop the clinical skills required serving as a perinatal consultant. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is well funded and serves as one of the centers for the NIH Women’s Reproductive Health Research grants.

During the three-year training program, the fellow will spend 18 months in clinical activities (including electives) and 18 months in protected research activities. Clinical activity includes involvement with high-risk patients on the antepartum service, high-risk obstetrics clinic, and diabetes clinic, as well as extensive experience in the prenatal diagnosis center with ultrasound, genetic amniocentesis, fetal blood sampling and transfusion, and placental biopsies.

There is a significant basic science and clinical collaboration with the Department of Pediatrics, as well as other departments in a productive collegial environment. The program has a wide variety of basic and clinical research options with an emphasis on experimental design and data analysis which are offered to the fellow through four possible research tracts: maternal-fetal physiology, prenatal diagnosis, infectious diseases, and reproductive biology. There are large and small animal capabilities. Training in all aspects of molecular biology is available.
