CORRECTION OF REFRACTIVE
ERROR
Glasses and
Contact Lenses
Glasses and contact
lenses represent the safest and most tried and true method of
correcting a refractive error.
Contact lenses are not without
risk, and meticulous hygiene is recommended to prevent potentially
serious infections. (Don't put them in your mouth! Clean them
daily, enzyme weekly. Change the contact case and solutions frequently.
Don't forget: extended wear doesn't mean the same thing as maintenance
free!)
For people
who wish to decrease their dependence on glasses or who may be
contact lens intolerant, refractive surgery is an option.
There are three main surgical
procedures available:
Radial and Astigmatic Keratotomy,
Laser vision correction,
and
implantable devices for the cornea or
eye such as the ICR
(intracorneal ring) and IOL (Intraocular contact
lens).
