CORRECTION OF REFRACTIVE
ERROR:
Other Refractive
Procedures
The FDA has recently approved
implantable corneal rings (ICR). These
devices are surgically implanted in the corneal surface and create
a distortion in the surface that flattens the cornea. ICR works
best for low degrees of nearsightedness (less than 4 diopters
of myopia). ICR is potentially reversible and can spare the central
cornea from the risk of scarring but cannot correct astigmatism
at present.
The ICL, (implantable contact lens) is currently undergoing FDA investigational
trials. This lens is placed inside the eye, behind the iris and
in front of the natural lens of the eye. Initial results are
very encouraging for high myopia (12-20 diopters). |
