Results of Surgery

Many patients can perform all or most of their daily visual tasks such as reading or driving free of contacts and glasses. However, it is more realistic to think of refractive surgery as decreasing your dependence on glasses, instead of eliminating them all together. People over the age of 40 are more likely to need help with reading. Occasionally night driving glasses may also be needed.

Results are best for low myopia (1-6 diopters). The chance of needing an enhancement or touch-up procedure increases with the degree of nearsightedness. Vision may not be as crisp as with glasses or contacts since there is almost always some degree of residual refractive error remaining. Results also vary according to the surgeon's experience and expertise. A discussion with the surgeon of the results possible from your chosen procedure and refractive error is recommended.
