The primary mission of the Bioengineering Division is to develop
state of the art projects in musculoskeletal research for the
training of orthopaedic residents, fellows, medical, engineering,
and graduate students interested in a career in this field. Most
training focuses on problem identification, hypothesis formation,
experimental design of transdisciplinary protocols, interaction
of engineering, medicine and basic sciences techniques in problem
solving, data analysis, and conclusion development.
The presence of a transdisciplinary team is conducive to the
diversification of the knowledge of all the trainees / students
providing the depth and breadth of the technology necessary to
solve complex medical problems. Orthopaedic faculty are integral
partners on the various research projects allowing for further
incorporation of the transdisciplinary perspective in the research.
The laboratories in the Bioengineering Division maintain an open
door policy for residents and students from other departments or
campuses who can improve or benefit their professional training
by exposure gained while working with us.
Core Laboratories
Machine Shop
A fully-equipped machine shop for construction of custom experimental
set-ups for human, animal, and biomechanical research is available
to support all projects conducted in the Bioengineering Center.
The shop is staffed with a full-time operator with 20 years experience.
Bioinstrumentation Laboratory
An electronic facility is available for design and construction
of one-of-a-kind / custom instrumentation such as special sensors,
amplifiers, stimulators, interfaces, etc. to be used in any of the
projects conducted in the center. The laboratory is equipped with
state-of-the-art instruments for electronics design such as oscilloscopes,
power supplies, signal generators, multi-functional meters, PC design
and fabrication, etc.
