CU Orthopaedics is proud to offer the following fellowships for future leaders in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine:

CU Sports Medicine is pleased to offer two 1-year post-graduate experiences in orthopaedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery. Our mission is to train academically interested future leaders in sports medicine and shoulder surgery.

The fellowship experience is 52 weeks in duration, beginning August 1, and includes:

  • Clinical Activity
    Fellows will be exposed to a variety of sports medicine and shoulder conditions, from simple to complex, emphasizing surgical and rehabilitation approaches.
  • Research
    Fellows will have dedicated research time with opportunities in evidence based clinical medicine and basic science research. Fellows will be expected to produce at least one publishable manuscript, and will gain experience in grant writing techniques.
  • Team Physician Experience
    Team physician experience covering two Division I collegiate athletics with Vanderbilt University, Belmont University, and local high schools.
  • Academic Curriculum
    The sports medicine curriculum is based on the AOSSM curriculum for sports medicine fellows and includes weekly lectures, journal club, anatomy review with cadaver dissections, and opportunities to use a bioskills laboratory. Download curriculum (PDF).
  • Benefits
    • The stipend is commensurate with a University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine PGY-6 salary

Fellowship in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery Research

The department offers one fellowship position in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery Research. This is a 1 to 2 year post-graduate experience, beginning August 1.

The primary goal of this fellowship is to provide the fellow with direct experience in all phases of the research process, including literature review, project design, study set-up and implementation, analysis of data, interpretation of results and preparation of presentations and publications.

The fellow will take an active role in animal research and IDE studies. Research activity will be done jointly at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD), The Children’s Hospital, and Denver Health Medical Center, as well as in collaboration with the Colorado School of Mines on certain projects.

The fellow will have full access to the world-class research facilities available at UCD, one of the country’s most modern and up-to-date research campuses located in the beautiful Denver Metro area.

Fellowship in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery (Clinical)

The Department of Orthpaedics offers one fellowship position in Orthopaedic Spinal Surgery (Clinical). This is a 1 to 2 year post-graduate experience, beginning August 1.

The fellow will gain expertise in adult and adolescent degenerative and deformity issues, and will be exposed to numerous cases of trauma, spinal tumors and neoplastic diseases, pediatric spinal disorders, and spinal rehabilitation. The fellow will stay abreast of the newest techniques, such as minimally invasive exposures, kyphoplasty, disk replacement, and surgical navigation techniques.

The one year fellowship will be spent at University of Colorado Hospital and Denver Health Medical Center, six months each, respectively. The fellow will also be involved in the care of pediatric patients at The Childrens’ Hospital. The fellow will interact with residents from the orthopaedic and neurosurgical programs at the University.

The fellow will be expected to be involved with a research project worthy of publication or presentation to a national spinal meeting.

The fellow will have available the extensive resources and the world-class facilities at the University of Colorado Denver, one of the foremost research campuses in the country, located in the beautiful Denver Metro area.

Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery Fellowship

The primary goal of this fellowship is to provide an educational environment in pediatric orthopaedic surgery committed to scholarship, teaching, development of analytic skills, surgical judgment, surgical competence, and research creativity. Support is provided by efficient inpatient and outpatient facilities, laboratory resources, libraries, audiovisual and computer facilities, secretarial support, and pediatric physical and occupational therapists.

The fellowship is at the Children's Hospital and its suburban health centers. The institution is a 233-bed facility that has a Level I trauma unit and offers a diverse exposure to every aspect of pediatric orthopaedics. Emphasis is placed on teaching at all levels. Conferences are given regularly under the direction of both the Fellow and the faculty. Basic experience is gained by five full days of elective pediatric orthopaedics and spine surgery per week in addition to frequent emergency cases. The Fellow participates in weekly pediatric orthopaedic and related clinics, including general, scoliosis, trauma, myelodysplasia, cerebral palsy, hand, and bone disorder.

Adult Reconstruction Fellowship

The goal of this program is to help the Fellow develop a basic understanding of surgery of arthritis including medical and surgical management of musculoskeletal conditions of peripheral joints. Consisting of didactic and clinical study of the arthropathies of the peripheral joints, the fellowship includes education in prevention and nonoperative treatment and surgical therapy for these problems. The program is designed to enable the Fellow to achieve competence in basic science skills involving the target diseases. The Fellow will participate in educational programs at the University of Colorado Hospital.
