PATHOLOGY OF THE KIDNEY AND ITS COLLECTING SYSTEM (Francisco G. La Rosa, MD)
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: This chapter intends to provide the basic knowledge on renal and urinary tract pathology at the organ, cellular and molecular levels. The student should be able to identify and describe the most important components of renal pathology: - renal syndromes and urinary infections - diabetes - obstructive processes - tumors - autoimmune diseases
A basic review of the embryology, anatomy, histology and physiology of the kidney is required to better understand the basic principles of renal pathology. We recommend the reading of the corresponding sections in either of the books:
- "Pathology", Alan Stevens and James Lowe. Mosby 1995. Chapter 15, Urinary System pp 317-349 - "Basic Pathology" (6th or 7th ed) by Kumar, Cotran and Robbins, Chapter 14.
If possible, it is recommended that the students review other bibliographic references for a more complete understanding of renal pathology. |
