The Department of Pathology offers intensive, yet
flexible, training in clinical, autopsy, surgical, cytological, and experimental
pathology. This training is designed to prepare physicians for careers in
academic and private practice pathology, and consists of 48 months of training
of which up to 12 months are designated as electives.
The first year involves training primarily in
surgical and autopsy pathology with 3 months usually devoted to clinical
pathology. Residents spend the remaining 36 months training in surgical and
cytopathology, hematopathology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, clinical
chemistry, molecular pathology, and electives including dermatopathology,
neuropathology, pediatric pathology, and forensic pathology. Residents may elect to spend up to six
months devoted to a specialized area of research. Didactic seminars and tutorials exploring fundamental
problems in all aspects of pathology reduce the apprenticeship aspects of the
training program. Additional fellowship training is available in surgical
pathology, dermatopathology, pediatric pathology, and transfusion
medicine.
Sub-specialization, to meet increasing
demands and complexity of modern pathology, is encouraged and made possible by
the large faculty with diverse interests. Faculty with specialty interests and research programs in
ultra-structural aspects of disease, molecular pathology, and biochemistry as
they apply to dermatopathology, gastrointestinal and hepatic disease, endocrine
and gynecological pathology, hematology, transfusion medicine, coagulation,
neoplasia, cardiac pathology, renal and pulmonary disease, immunopathology,
cytogenetics, neuropathology, transplantation pathology, pediatric pathology,
and skeletal pathology participate in the program. Training in forensic pathology and dermatopathology are
offered as resident rotations. Pathology
training utilizes the staff and facilities of University of Colorado Hospital,
The Children's Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, and the Denver Veterans
Affairs Medical Center.
In addition to preparing trainees for the
practice of pathology, the training of medical scientists in experimental
pathology is a central focus.
All residents are required to complete a
scholarly project. This may be
completed during a core rotation, during an elective rotation, or for residents
successfully completing the required rotations, may consist of blocks of up to
6 months of research elective, during which residents may spend time in a laboratory
working on research projects sponsored by faculty advisors. House officers teach in the interactive
pathology course for sophomore medical students during which case-oriented
presentations are employed in small group sessions.
There are close liaisons with specialty areas
of clinical departments, including dermatology, pediatrics, nephrology,
neurology, transplantation surgery, oncology, and the basic sciences.
