- Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Program
The 12-month fellowship is designed to
prepare individuals for a career in blood banking/ transfusion
medicine at an academic medical center, a community blood center, or
a private practice setting where the individual will be responsible
for managing a transfusion service or donor center. This fellowship
provides primary training at The Children's Hospital and the
University of Colorado Hospital, two large referral centers for
pediatric and adult medicine. Time may also be spent at other
affiliated institutions. Training encompasses all aspects of blood
banking and transfusion medicine including donor testing, blood
product processing, transfusion consultation, therapeutic and donor
apheresis, coagulation, tissue typing, peripheral blood stem cell
collection and blood bank management. More than 25,000 blood
products are transfused at the primary fellowship institutions
(including 14,000 red blood cells and 3,500 platelets). The fellow
is encouraged to participate in research projects leading to
presentation at national meetings and publication. The fellow will
also be responsible for education of residents and medical students.
An optional second year for in-depth research and additional studies
may be available.
Requirements:
Applicants should be AP/CP or CP board eligible or certified, other

- Dermatopathology Program
The 12-month fellowship is designed to
prepare individuals with a background in pathology or dermatology
for a career in dermatopathology. Training covers a broad range of
subjects including immunopathology and laboratory management.
Emphasis is placed on clinico-pathologic correlation. Formal
teaching conferences and daily sign out of cases utilize 14-headed
and 18-headed teaching microscopes. The fellow has graduated
responsibility for signing out cases and for teaching
dermatopathology to pathology and dermatology residents.
Pathologists receive training in clinical dermatology and
dermatologists receive training in general pathology as required for
certification. Dermatopathology responsibility and training
continues throughout the full 12 months. The fellow is expected to
complete a project suitable for presentation at a national meeting
and publication in a medical journal. Support is offered in
identifying employment opportunities, which will utilize the
fellow's dermatopathology experience. Two fellows are appointed each
year.

- Pediatric Pathology Program
The Departments of Pathology at The
Children's Hospital and the School of Medicine, University of
Colorado Denver, offer a one to two year, ACGME-accredited
fellowship in pediatric pathology. The program comprises pediatric
surgical pathology, perinatal pathology, autopsy pathology, blood
banking, transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, hematology,
microbiology, virology, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics and
electron microscopy. A combination of research and service activity
is encouraged. However, the fellowship year can be tailored to the
incumbent's intent to enter academic pathology or private practice.
The Children's Hospital is a 270-bed freestanding hospital and is
the major site for the University's Department of Pediatrics. Its
Department of Pathology processes approximately 5,000 surgical, 500
bone marrow and 3,500 cytology specimens annually. The University
Department processes more than 350 perinatal autopsies and
placentas, predominantly from high-risk pregnancies. The combined
pediatric pathology faculty consists of three anatomic pathologists,
one clinical pathologist and three PhDs. The close relationship
between the Departments allows the fellow to draw upon expertise and
resources in virtually every area of diagnostic and experimental
pathology. The Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado
Denver, School of Medicine are both located at the Anschutz Medical
Campus.
Requirements:
Applicants should have completed training in an approved residency
program in AP or AP/CP. Applications for appointment beginning July
1 of the preceding year will be considered until December 1.

Surgical Pathology Program
The Surgical Pathology Fellowship at the University
of Colorado is a one-year comprehensive and concentrated program in
diagnostic service and in research. The program accepts one to two
applicants into the program each year. The fellows participate in
the sign-out of most general surgical pathology cases, including a
relatively high proportion of organ transplant biopsies and
resection specimens from breast, GI, lung, and gynecologic oncology
cases. The fellows play "front line" roles in the frozen section
service at the main University Hospital campus and also have the
opportunity to participate in gynecologic and non-gynecologic
cytology services at the new Fitzsimons campus. Each fellow helps to
present cases at a wide range of clinical conferences, including
Tumor Board, Liver/GI, Gynecologic Oncology, Brain Tumor, Bone/Soft
Tissue, Melanoma, Breast and Endocrine conferences.
The Surgical Pathology Fellows are each given three months of
protected time, during which they concentrate on an academic project
that may include translational or basic research. Most of the
fellows choose to develop a research project in one of the
department's many research laboratories, focusing on the analysis of
regulators of cell growth, cell death, molecular markers of
neoplasia, or many other interesting projects under the supervision
of our diagnostic and basic science faculty.
Requirements: Applicants should be AP/CP or AP Board eligible or
certified; interview required.
Deadline:
November 1st of each year for fellowship programs
starting the following year.
