- Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine Program
The 12-month fellowship is designed to prepare individuals for a career in blood banking/ transfusion medicine at an academic medical center, a community blood center, or a private practice setting where the individual will be responsible for managing a transfusion service or donor center. This fellowship provides primary training at The Children's Hospital and the University of Colorado Hospital, two large referral centers for pediatric and adult medicine. Time may also be spent at other affiliated institutions. Training encompasses all aspects of blood banking and transfusion medicine including donor testing, blood product processing, transfusion consultation, therapeutic and donor apheresis, coagulation, tissue typing, peripheral blood stem cell collection and blood bank management. More than 25,000 blood products are transfused at the primary fellowship institutions (including 14,000 red blood cells and 3,500 platelets). The fellow is encouraged to participate in research projects leading to presentation at national meetings and publication. The fellow will also be responsible for education of residents and medical students. An optional second year for in-depth research and additional studies may be available.

Applicants should be AP/CP or CP board eligible or certified, other specialties may also be considered; interview is required.
- Cytopathology Program
This fellowship provides one year of advanced training in diagnostic cytopathology and the performance of fine needle aspirations in a dedicated fine needle aspiration clinic. The fellows perform fine needle aspirations with and without ultrasound guidance and perform immediate interpretations in radiologic and clinical settings. The cytopathology service evaluates approximately 20,000 gynecologic Pap tests and 5,000 non-gynecologic specimens, including 1,400 fine needle aspiration specimens per year. Fellows assume graduated responsibility throughout the year. The fellows actively participate in continuous quality improvement efforts in the cytopathology and pre-analytic sections and are enrolled in a year-long transformational leadership program. The fellows learn basic research principles and design and conduct a research project during their programmatic year.

- Dermatopathology Program
The 12-month fellowship is designed to prepare individuals with a background in pathology or dermatology for a career in dermatopathology. Training covers a broad range of subjects including immunopathology and laboratory management. Emphasis is placed on clinico-pathologic correlation. Formal teaching conferences and daily sign out of cases utilize 14-headed and 18-headed teaching microscopes. The fellow has graduated responsibility for signing out cases and for teaching dermatopathology to pathology and dermatology residents. Pathologists receive training in clinical dermatology and dermatologists receive training in general pathology as required for certification. Dermatopathology responsibility and training continues throughout the full 12 months. The fellow is expected to complete a project suitable for presentation at a national meeting and publication in a medical journal. Support is offered in identifying employment opportunities, which will utilize the fellow's dermatopathology experience. Two fellows are appointed each year.

This 12-month training program is designed to prepare individuals for a career in forensic pathology. The fellowship provides primary training at the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, a NAME accredited office with academic ties to the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine. Additional rotations at the Denver Police Department Crime Laboratory and The Veterans Affairs Medical Center / Chemistry and Molecular Laboratories provide training is DNA / serology, firearms, trace evidence, scene documentation and photography, latent prints, drug analysis and toxicology. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner accepts primary jurisdiction on between 1050 and 1200 cases each year, and performs approximately 730-850 medicolegal autopsies and 250-300 visual examinations each year. Faculty includes 3 AP/CP/FP board certified pathologists. Support staff includes 7 medicolegal death investigators and 4 full time forensic autopsy technicians. The fellow will be expected to perform between 200 and 250 autopsies, and will be responsible for the final report and death certification. In addition, the fellow will communicate with families, law enforcement, attorneys, health professionals and other interested parties; participate in community emergency preparedness and various death review processes; provide testimony and expert opinions and participate in resident and medical student education. During the training period the fellow will develop skills in forensic photography, chain of custody and evidence collection, interpretation of postmortem laboratory testing, and identification of remains. The fellow is encouraged to present a paper or poster at a national forensic meeting.
Requirements:
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy, be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Colorado and be board eligible or board certified in AP or AP/CP by the start of the fellowship term. An interview is required.
Stipend:
The fellow will be an employee of the City and County of Denver. The salary for this position is currently $72,322; pay grade 401-D. Benefits with the City and County of Denver meet the requirements of ACGME.

- Pediatric Pathology Program
The Departments of Pathology at The Children's Hospital and the School of Medicine, University of Colorado Denver, offer a one to two year, ACGME-accredited fellowship in pediatric pathology. The program comprises pediatric surgical pathology, perinatal pathology, autopsy pathology, blood banking, transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, hematology, microbiology, virology, flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics and electron microscopy. A combination of research and service activity is encouraged. However, the fellowship year can be tailored to the incumbent's intent to enter academic pathology or private practice. The Children's Hospital is a 270-bed freestanding hospital and is the major site for the University's Department of Pediatrics. Its Department of Pathology processes approximately 5,000 surgical, 500 bone marrow and 3,500 cytology specimens annually. The University Department processes more than 350 perinatal autopsies and placentas, predominantly from high-risk pregnancies. The combined pediatric pathology faculty consists of three Anatomic pathologists, one clinical pathologist and three PhD's. The close relationship between the Departments allows the fellow to draw upon expertise and resources in virtually every area of diagnostic and experimental pathology. The Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado Denver, School of Medicine are both located at the Anschutz Medical Campus.

This is a one year fellowship program with 2 positions per year which provides the trainee with advanced training and experience in general surgical pathology at a busy academic medical center. The department sees approximately 21,000 surgical pathology specimens per year and an additional 4500 non-gynecologic cytology specimens, as well as 1500 fine needle aspirations. The fellowship consists of 10 months of structured training, predominantly as a "hot-seat" fellowship, such that the fellow previews all surgical cases and initiates appropriate workup of them. Additionally, the fellow is responsible for reviewing all outside cases sent to this institution for consultations and review, as well as graduated responsibility for covering the frozen section laboratory. Additional opportunities include teaching medical students in small group sessions, oversight of residents in the gross room and in preparation of cases for signout, and presentation at selected interdisciplinary conferences. The remaining months of the fellowship can be individually tailored to meet the needs of the fellow and spent in clinical or basic research or used for more rigorous training in various areas of surgical pathology.

Applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 years of post-graduate training at an ACGME-accredited residency program.
