Learning Objectives

CASE 1:

1. Briefly describe the clinical presentation and the gross and histologic features of endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma.

2. Describe the role of unopposed estrogen in type 1 versus type 2 endometrial carcinomas.

 

CASE 2 & 3:

1. Describe the salient gross anatomic features of ovarian cystadenomas, borderline tumors, and carcinomas.

2. Discuss the major histologic characteristics that define benign cystadenomas versus borderline tumors versus invasive carcinomas of the ovary.

3. List and understand the major histologic features of endometrioid, serous, mucinous, and clear cell tumors.

4. Understand the role of CA 125 as a marker of ovarian cancer.

5. Discuss the association of BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations with ovarian cancer.

6. Understand the significance of histologic type of ovarian carcinoma with regard to bilaterality and metastatic potential, and long term survival.

 

CASE 4:

1. Discuss the clinical presentation, gross pathologic features, and histogenesis of dysgerminomas.

2. Review the primary histologic features that help establish a diagnosis of dysgerminoma.

3. Understand the appropriate clinical management, pattern of dissemination, and prognosis of these tumors.

4. Discus the association of these tumors with other histologic patterns in mixed germ cell tumors of the ovary.

 

CASE 4:

1. Discuss the clinical presentation and clinical differential diagnosis of Sex cord-stromal tumors.

2. Review the primary histologic features that help establish a diagnosis of sertoli-leydig cell tumor versus fibromas and granulosa-theca cell tumors of the ovary.

3. Understand the appropriate clinical management, pattern of dissemination, and prognosis of these tumors.
