This free-standing, core course in Pathology is
given throughout the sophomore year of medical school. Upon
completion of this course the student should have a basic and
systematic understanding and knowledge of human disease, and should be
prepared for the clinical clerkships and subsequent medical education.
The format consists
lectures and small-group sessions. The latter consist of 10 – 12
students and an instructor/facilitator. Each session uses case
material – in the form of an autopsy, single organs, microscopic
slides, 35 mm slides, and/or on-line materials (click
here). The emphasis in the small group sessions is on
observation, analysis, correlation and problem-solving. The student is
expected to utilize his/her knowledge and skills learned in the basic
sciences (anatomy, histology, physiology, genetics) during the first
year together with material being covered in ongoing courses
(pharmacology, pathophysiology, immunology, microbiology, and clinical
exposure).
The
instructor/facilitators include full-time faculty based at the
University as well as the affiliated hospitals, volunteer faculty,
fellows, and residents. The course is rated very highly by the students-
in all categories – and at least twenty instructor/facilitators receive
“Excellence in Teaching” awards from the students annually.

In addition to the “regular” pathology course the Department gives a
concurrent alternative course for M.S.T.P. (M.D./Ph.D.) and graduate
students (Ph.D.) in Experimental Pathology and other fields. In
addition to the material covered in the “regular” course the
alternative course also emphasizes the bioscientific aspects of
disease and it is offered to a small number of students in the medical
school class.
