Letter from the Chairman
and the CEO
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We are pleased to provide the Department of Pediatrics 2006 Annual Report. As you will see, the Department of Pediatrics has established a strong
legacy of leading-edge research, education and clinical care at The Children’s Hospital and
the University of Colorado. As the affiliation between these two great organizations continues
to mature and prosper, the Department is poised for a time of pivotal growth as it assumes its
place on the new Fitzsimons campus in October of 2007.
Again this past year, both the Department of Pediatrics and The Children’s Hospital were
ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News and World Report and Child Magazine. To help continue
this tradition of excellence, the new Children’s Hospital at Fitzsimons will provide nearly 1.5
million square feet of clinical facilities that will anchor an ever-expanding network of care,
ensuring that the children of Colorado and throughout the region continue to have access to
outstanding pediatric health care.
The move to the combined Fitzsimons and Anschutz Medical Campus will also facilitate
exciting academic and research initiatives that will continue to enhance our position of pediatric
national prominence. On the academic side, the single-campus location will help to advance
the educational excellence and innovation that have become hallmarks of the Department of
Pediatrics. With regard to research, the new campus will support essential collaborations
between the Department of Pediatrics and other departments at the Health Sciences Center.
The new campus, with its state-of-the-art laboratory and clinical facilities, will provide the
ideal context for translational research efforts.
This report focuses on four key areas: the Heart Institute; the Pediatric Heart Lung Center;
Developmental Biology; and Medical Education Research and Development. The enclosed
CD-ROM also includes links to important and useful information about the Department of
Pediatrics and The Children’s Hospital on the Internet, as well as video footage of the new
Children’s Hospital.
We hope this information provides an opportunity to glimpse the exciting role the Department
of Pediatrics continues to play in building and securing a bright future for pediatric
research, education, advocacy and clinical care in Colorado and the nation.
