Mark J. Abzug, MD, earned his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1982. In 1985 he completed pediatric residency training at the University of Rochester, including a Chief Residency in the Pediatric Ambulatory Department of Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, New York. Following pediatric infectious diseases fellowship training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, Dr. Abzug joined the faculty of The Children's Hospital and the Department of Pediatrics Section of Infectious Diseases in 1988. He is the Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Organization at The Children's Hospital, which he co-founded in 1997. He served as interim Section Head of Pediatric Infectious Diseases from 2001-2002 and received The Children's Hospital Outstanding Service Award in 2002.
Dr. Abzug's research interests include perinatal viral infections, enterovirus infections, antiviral therapy, opportunistic infections, chronic sinusitis, and clinical trials research. He is an active participant and leader in many national investigative committees, including the Enterovirus Subcommittee of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Collaborative Antiviral Study Group, which he has chaired since 2000, and the National Institutes of Health Pediatric AIDS Clinical Trials Group Opportunistic Infections and Metabolic Subcommittee, which he has chaired since 2003.
Dr. Abzug is board certified in Pediatrics and subspecialty certified in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
