Stephen Berman, MD
Professor of Pediatrics
Section Head, General Academic Pediatrics

Stephen Berman, MD, earned his medical degree in 1971 from Temple University Medical School. He completed his pediatric residency in 1975 at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and a Chief Residency there the following year. Dr. Berman served as a Visiting Professor of Pediatrics at Universidad del Valle in Colombia and as a Research Scientist for Tulane University’s International Center for Medical Research before joining the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1978. He was Head of the Section of General Academic Pediatrics from 1980 to 1990 and again from 1998.

Dr. Berman has held many prestigious positions in the world of Pediatrics. He has served as Consultant to the World Health Organization and Pan American Health Organization on Control of Acute Respiratory Infections; National Chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Child Health Financing; Director of Health Policy and State Medically Indigent Programs for the University of Colorado; and President of Colorado Bright Beginnings. From 2000 to 2001, Dr. Berman was President of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Berman has been singled out for many awards and honors throughout his career. Most recently he was chosen to receive the Ambulatory Pediatric Association’s Advocacy Award at their 2007 annual meeting in Toronto. He received the Bonfils-Stanton Community Service Award, the Champion for Kids Award from the Colorado Children's Campaign in 2005, and Denver City Club Award for Community Service in 1996. In addition, he received a Special Achievement Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2003; the Outstanding Alumni Award from Temple University School of Medicine in 2001; and the James E. Strain Community Service Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Colorado Chapter in 2000. He is a member of many professional societies and serves on numerous state, national, and international committees, including the Cochrane Collaboration on Acute Respiratory Infection Collaborative Research Study Group and the Pan American Health Organization Advisory Group on Integrated Case Management for Children. He also serves on several Boards of Directors and Policy Advisory Boards.

Dr. Berman is the consulting Editor for Health Policy for Pediatrics and serves on the editorial board of Ambulatory Pediatrics. He also contributes as a peer reviewer for many well-known scientific journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). He has written numerous journal articles, book chapters, and training/ educational materials, including Pediatric Decision Making, which is a popular textbook for residents and practitioners now in its fourth edition. He has held visiting professorships and consultant positions worldwide and is a popular speaker both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Berman’s research interests include otitis media, access to health care, and immunization services delivery research.

Dr. Berman is board certified in Pediatrics.
