Robert B. Clyman, MD, earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine (UCSOM) in 1985. He completed a Residency in Psychiatry in1989 at UCSOM, as well as an NIMH-funded Post Doctoral Research Fellowship with the Developmental Psychobiology Research Group, Department of Psychiatry at UCSOM, in 1992. He completed an additional Residency in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC, in 1994.
In 1998 Dr. Clyman joined the faculty of the Departments of Pediatrics and Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital. He was appointed Executive Director of the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect and Co-Section Head for the Section on Family and Child Health, and he was also named the Jack and Viki Thompson Chair in Child Maltreatment and Family Health.
Dr. Clyman’s research interests include pediatric psychiatry and child maltreatment. He has been the recipient of numerous research grants for his work. He is currently the principal investigator for an Infants in Foster Care Project entitled “New Start for Infants in Denver,” which is funded by the Children's Bureau at the Administration for Children and Families, US Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Clyman has received many awards and honors throughout his career. He has been active in a variety of national committees, review groups, and study sections. In 2005 he participated in the Surgeon General's Workshop on Child Maltreatment. Since 2001 he has been highly involved with the Task Force on Foster Care and Mental Health for the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry/Child Welfare League of America; currently he serves as Research Director for the Task Force as well as an Organizing Committee Member.
A respected reviewer of professional medical journals, Dr. Clyman also served as an Associate Editor for the Infant Mental Health Journal. He is an accomplished author of both journal articles and book chapters, as well as a popular speaker nationwide.
Dr. Clyman is board certified in both Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
