Glenn T. Furuta, MD

Glenn T. Furuta, MD, earned his medical degree in 1986 from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and subsequently completed his Pediatric Residency and a Chief Residency there in 1990. Dr. Furuta finished a Clinical Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology in 1991 and a Research Fellowship in 1993, both at Harvard Medical School in the Combined Program in Pediatric GI/Nutrition. From 1993 to 2006, Dr. Furuta was a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty. He joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 2007.
Dr. Furuta focuses on caring for patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases and performing research to understand the role of eosinophils in the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical research investigations concentrate on eosinophilic esophagitis. Basic and translational studies seek to determine the relationship between the eosinophils and resident cells of the intestinal mucosa, including the epithelium.
During the course of his work, Dr. Furuta has published 75 publications in peer reviewed journals, books and specialty journals focusing on the role of eosinophils in the gastrointestinal tract. His research is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Pappas Foundation.
As a part of his efforts to educate others about eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, Dr. Furuta has given numerous presentations at local, national and international meetings. In 2006, he was the Scientific Co-Organizer and Chairman of the First International Gastrointestinal Eosinophil Researchers Symposium in Orlando, Florida. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Eosinophilic Disease Study Group for the World Congress of Pediatric Gastroenterology in Brazil, October 2008.
He has been active in the realm of education as evidenced by his position as the Associate Training Program Director for the Harvard Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship Program, where he served for a number of years. Dr. Furuta is now Chair of the Scientific Oversight Committee for the Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Furuta serves as a member of the Training Grant Study Section of the Crohn’s Colitis Foundation of America, is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, and acts as the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board of the American Partnership for Eosinophilic Diseases.
Dr. Furuta belongs to numerous professional organizations, including the International Eosinophil Society, The International Gastrointestinal Eosinophil Researchers, the Society of Pediatric Research, the American Gastroenterological Association, the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
Dr. Furuta is board certified in Pediatric Gastroenterology.
