Professor of Pediatrics
Associate Program Director, Pediatric Clinical Translational Research Center
Director, Neonatal Clinical Research Center
Scientific Director, Perinatal Research Center

William W. Hay, Jr., MD, earned his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1971. He completed his Pediatric Residency and Fellowship in Perinatal Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, in 1974, and 1978, respectively.

Dr. Hay joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1978. He was appointed Professor of Pediatrics in 1988. Dr. Hay currently serves as Director of the Neonatal Clinical Research Center, Scientific Director of the Perinatal Research Center, and Assistant Director of the Training Program in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.

Dr. Hay’s basic research is supported by NIH-funded research project grants to study various aspects of placental and fetal growth restriction, with specific attention to placental nutrient transfer and metabolism, fetal insulin secretion, and fetal insulin action. This research is aimed at understanding how disturbances in maternal nutrient supply to the placenta and fetus produce adaptations in fetal development that could underlie later life disorders such as obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes.

His clinical research through the Neonatal-Perinatal Clinical-Translational Research Center focuses on early postnatal intravenous nutrition of the extremely low birth weight infant, aimed at determining the optimal amount and mixture of amino acids and energy supplies to promote early and optimal growth of body weight and composition in preterm infants to prevent postnatal growth restriction. He also is a world’s expert in research devoted to neonatal applications of pulse oximetry to monitor blood oxygenation in newborn infants.

Dr. Hay is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Currently, he is the 2008 President of the American Pediatric Society, and he also served that society as the Secretary-Treasurer from 1998 to 2004. He received the 2005 Nutrition Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2006, he received the Agnes Higgins Award from the March of Dimes in recognition of a career achievement in the impact of maternal nutrition on infant health. He was recently a Co-Winner of the First Society for Pediatric Research Conference on Research (“SPRC”) of the Society for Pediatric Research.

Dr. Hay is an active member of numerous scientific committees and associations. He has been a member of four NIH study sections over 14 years and served as chair of three of these. He serves on the Editorial Boards of several medical journals, including the American Academy of Pediatrics’ NeoReviews, where he has been Editor since 1998. He is the Senior Editor of Current Pediatric Diagnosis and Treatment, the largest selling textbook of Pediatric medicine in the US. He is a peer reviewer for an extensive list of journals and is widely published in the medical literature. Dr. Hay is a popular invited lecturer both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Hay is board certified in Pediatrics and in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
