Taru Hays, MD
Professor of Pediatrics
Clinical Director, Hematology
Taru Hays, MD, earned her medical degree in 1962 from Seth G.S. Medical College in Bombay, India. She completed her Residency in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1967, and Fellowships in Clinical Hematology and Hematology Research from the Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C., from 1968 to 1970. She spent a year doing Hematology research at the Children’s hospital in Portland, Oregon, followed by an year as a Research Fellow at University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Hays joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1976. She was appointed Professor of Pediatrics in 1991 and serves as Clinical Director of the Hematology Section.
Dr. Hays’ research interests include transient erythroblastopenia of childhood—its pathophysiology, familial thrombocytopenia, epidemiology of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, venous thrombosis in pediatrics, and immunotherapy for severe aplastic anemia. She is the recipient of several research grants for her work and is widely published in scientific journals and textbooks.
In addition to her responsibilities at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital, Dr. Hays has served as a Visiting Professor in locations as diverse as Guatemala, Thailand, and Peru. She has received numerous teaching awards throughout her career and was recently listed in 5280 Magazine’s “Top Doctors in Denver.”
Dr. Hays is board certified in Pediatrics and in Pediatric Hematology.
