David W. Kaplan, MD, MPH, earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University in 1970 and completed his Pediatric Residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1972. At Boston Children’s Hospital he completed a Fellowship in Ambulatory and Adolescent Medicine in 1975, and he received a Master’s in Public Health from Harvard University in 1976. Dr. Kaplan has served as Section Head of Adolescent Medicine since joining the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1984. He has been Chief Medical Information Officer since 1993.
Dr. Kaplan’s current research interests include evaluating the impact of school-based health centers on child and adolescent access to health care, utilization and health status. Supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Dr. Kaplan developed an electronic problem-orientated clinical information system designed to facilitate both clinical care and outcome-based research. The software is used in over 1,000 school-based health centers nationally. The software has served as the basis for more than 50 scientific publications looking at health care utilization for adolescents served in school-based health and mental health programs. Dr. Kaplan is also interested in studying the use of the Internet for providing comprehensive physical and mental health information to adolescents. He has been awarded numerous grants for his research.
Dr. Kaplan has been the recipient of many awards and honors throughout his career. Recently, he was given the Founders of Adolescent Health Award by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Adolescent Health and was elected to the American Pediatric Society. In 2005 Dr. Kaplan received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Assembly for School-Based Health Care; the James E. Strain Award in Pediatrics from The Children's Hospital Medical Staff; and the Dr. Minnie C.T. Love "Medicine" Award from The Children's Hospital Foundation. He is consistently recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in America.”
Dr. Kaplan participates extensively on numerous boards and committees at the institutional, state, regional, and national levels and is currently Chair of the Child and Adolescent Health Action Group for the American Academy of Pediatrics and Board Chair for the Center for Adolescent Health and the Law.
He is a peer reviewer for many professional medical journals and was Editor-in-Chief of the journal Pediatrician—International Journal of Child and Adolescent Health for eight years. He is widely published and is a popular speaker and visiting professor nationwide. He holds copyrights for several medical information software programs.
Dr. Kaplan is board certified in Pediatrics and Preventive Medicine and subspecialty certified in Adolescent Medicine.
