Cara L. Mack, MD
Assistant Professor of Pediatrics

Cara L. Mack, MD, earned her medical degree in 1992 from Loyola University Chicago, Stritch School of Medicine. She completed her Pediatric Residency and Chief Residency at the University of Chicago Hospitals in 1996 and a Fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Children’s Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, in 2001.

Dr. Mack joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 2002. As a secondary appointment related to her research, Dr. Mack joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine, Section of Allergy and Immunology, in 2003.

Dr. Mack cares for patients with liver disease and those undergoing liver transplantation in both the inpatient hospital setting and outpatient Liver Clinic. Furthermore, she takes care of patients with gastrointestinal diseases during her inpatient hospital duties.

Dr. Mack has received many NIH-funded grants supporting her research work in her primary topic of interest, biliary atresia. The cause of biliary atresia is not known and results in cirrhosis in the majority of patients. Biliary atresia is the number one indication for liver transplantation in children. Dr. Mack’s investigations center around the hypothesis that the cause of biliary atresia involves a viral-induced, progressive autoimmune-mediated destruction of bile ducts. She partakes in investigative studies of infants and children with biliary atresia as a co-investigator within the nationwide Biliary Atresia Research Consortium. Furthermore, she oversees the work of four other investigators within her laboratory who research various aspects of autoimmunity in the virus-induced mouse model of biliary atresia.

In 2005, Dr. Mack was awarded both the March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research Award and the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease Pediatric Research Abstract Award.

Dr. Mack is widely published in medical journals and serves as an ad hoc reviewer as well. She is an invited speaker nationwide.

Dr. Mack is triple-board certified in Pediatrics, Pediatric Gastroenterology, and Pediatric Transplant Hepatology.
