Susan Niermeyer, MD
Professor of Pediatrics

Susan Niermeyer, MD, earned her medical degree in 1979 from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. She completed her Residency in Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1982 and a Fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, also at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, in 1984. Dr. Niermeyer joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and The Children’s Hospital in 1990. She was appointed Professor of Pediatrics in 2003.

Dr. Niermeyer’s scholarly work focuses on neonatal resuscitation in the global context, with the goal of improving neonatal and child survival. She serves as editor in the development of a global curriculum in neonatal resuscitation, which is aimed at birth attendants in first-level health settings, especially in resource-limited settings. Under the auspices of the American Academy of Pediatrics and collaborating organizations, the curriculum will be field-tested and scaled up to assess its impact not only on the knowledge, skills, and practice of health care providers, but also on neonatal outcomes. She is technical advisor to Freedom of Breath, Fountain of Life, the program of the Chinese Ministry of Health to disseminate neonatal resuscitation training across the People’s Republic of China. In Colorado and South America, her research focuses on high-altitude physiology and altitude-related illness in infants and children. This includes the epidemiology of altitude-related illness, the physiology of postnatal cardiopulmonary transition at high altitude, and acute mountain sickness in infants and children. Dr. Niermeyer has received many grants for her research work.

Dr. Niermeyer is an active member of several international organizations for neonatal resuscitation and high-altitude medicine. She also takes an active role in many institutional committees, including the Pediatric CRC Advisory Committee at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Dr. Niermeyer is a reviewer for numerous medical journals, past member of the editorial board of NeoReviews, and a highly regarded speaker both nationally and internationally. In 2001, her contribution to the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 4th edition, was recognized with 1st Place in the American Medical Writer’s Association (AMWA) Medical Book Awards.

Dr. Niermeyer is board certified in Pediatrics and in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine.
